Uma's Chalkboard

Since 2013, Uma’s has been a cornerstone of the Rockaway Beach community, bringing the bold, comforting flavors of Uzbekistan to the edge of the Atlantic. What started as a local secret has become a New York destination, celebrated as much for its laid-back surf vibes as its authentic Central Asian soul. Our kitchen honors the heritage of Samarkand, serving a menu that bridges the gap between vibrant street food and rich, centuries-old traditions. From our signature hand-pulled lagman noodles and savory manti dumplings to the smoky, charcoal-grilled skewers that have earned us a cult following, every dish is a reflection of the diverse cultures found along the Silk Road. Whether you’re coming off the beach in your board shorts or looking for a cozy, candlelit dinner during the off-season, Uma’s offers a dining experience that is both exotic and deeply familial. Come for the eclectic atmosphere; stay for a taste of the East that you won't find anywhere else in the city. We are open everyday, for lunch and dinner, all year long!

The Infatuation

You can just as easily order a hearty dinner that will warm your bones on a chilly winter evening as you can a refreshing lunch, topped off with creamy sesame halva ice cream that hits perfectly after roasting on the sand all morning

The warm hospitality and quirkiness at this Uzbek restaurant is backed by a menu of lagman, borscht, beef goulash, and two types of dumplings (manti and pelmeni). Uma’s is best ordered to-go with compact and portable pelmeni a fun beach food alternative. The restaurant does have a dining room — no patio — which makes Uma’s a respite from the rain or during a heatwave.

Umas is the best bang for your buck in rockaway. The food is spiced just right. My favorite dish after a long day of sufing is the Plov with extra yogurt sauce. Umas is a rockaway institution at this point. Plus they play surfing on the tv all day, which I like but also is wicked distracting haha. Highly recommend Umas

The rich heartiness of these manti had my tongue searching for butter, or even vegan butter—of which there isn’t a single pat in Uma’s recipe. That fulfilling richness purely comes from the butternut squash Uma chops up, the vegetable oil she sautés with, and the hearty dough she rolls out.

Delicious homemade food. Portions are fair, I was full through half of a plate but had to finish it was soo good. Also cozy atmosphere, nice staff and music. Loved it

This was a clutch find when trying to kill some time before my JFK flight. The place was cute and cozy and the food was epic. We ordered the borscht which they split in two bowls for us then we shared an order of plov. Both were super good and felt virtuous to eat like a home cooked meal but better. A must if I am ever in that area again. Will not forget this one.

Our meal at Uma’s stopped me dead in my tracks. We ordered all the popular dishes and nothing missed ... hands down one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time.

We've been huge fans of uma's for a few years now. Everything is so fresh and delicious. The kimchi salad the red coconut lentil soup, and a hearty mash are vegan and so tasty. Great staff and people vibes.

The food is warm & delicious, feels as if you were eating homemade food from your grandma. Be sure to save room for the Halva Ice Cream and pair it with their real 100% Puerto Rican specialty coffee which you can only find in this location. Owner is great and present at the store.

Really nice spot doing authentic Uzbek dishes. Delicious food, laidback vibe, the perfect way to indulge after a nice beach session. The vegetarian dumplings were the standout dish for me. The noodles were also delicious.
